Transcript: Coffee Morning Lowdown

0'00" Kath: I’m Kath and I serve here on a Tuesday morning. [Alison’s laugh] Alison. She’s unique, she’s got a big laugh [Alison laughs in the background] for her, people come first.

0'11” Reverend Alison Taylor: I’ve been a part of this church all of my life, when I actually became the minister, my whole point really in being here was that we could reach out into the community and create spaces for the community

0'20” Dorothy (Doris): I’m Dorothy Horgan, we’re in the Baptist church, Potter Street, we’re having tea and cakes.

0'27” Reverend Alison Taylor: Doris, particularly, has lived in this community in Potter Street, I think, all her life, so this community means a huge amount to her.

0'36” Dorothy (Doris): I like to come because I can get out and the vicar always picks me up.

0'41” Kath: When she replaced the car she made sure she got one that could take as many people as possible, as many wheelchairs and walkers as possible, so that she could get people here.

0'54” Violet: Well I’m Violet Weston and I was in the Wrens, the Royal Navy, during World War II.

1’01" Betty: I’m Betty Smith and I went in the services at seventeen and a half, in the ATS, which was the Army.

1’11" Reverend Alison Taylor: [laughing] They are quite a pair. They’re both blind

1’14” Violet: and I’m tone deaf.

1’16” Reverend Alison Taylor: They talk to each other very loudly in the service, um, which is quite a distraction for everybody else, but we’ve kind of got used to them: “What did she say?”

1’26” Betty: Alison says it’s a church family

1'28" Violet: Well that’s right, it is

1'30" Betty: and if you’re not here they’ll ring you and say, um, we didn’t see you are you alright?

1'38" Violet: Yes

1'32" Betty: Do you need anything? Not, why didn’t you come? You’re never left alone.

1’45" Violet No, no.

1’46" Mary: My name is Mary Frances Butterly, I come here because nobody judges you in any way.

1’53" Ian: My name is Ian Walker, a recovering, compulsive gambler.

1’57" Mary: You know it’s a community church really and truly, it’s lovely, it’s a lovely place.

2’03" Ian: It wasn’t really until I had nothing and no-one and I was very very lonely and I bumped into a couple of members of this church, and they said “why don’t you come back?” And just, people welcomed me back as if I’d never gone away.

2’17" Alison: I really do think it’s a good community place to work and be

2’21" Ian: No-one’s ever, sort of, turned away from me, they’ve always just said “well done” and they give me a hug.

2’27" Violet: If it wasn’t for Alison and the church here, I don’t know where I would be, she’s an angel

2’35" Betty: It really is christianity

2’37" Violet: It is, it is christianity Betty, it really is. Yes, certainly is that dear, and I’m grateful for it, very grateful. [Alison laughs in the background]
