Venita: My first dish is:
Shell: Aloo Bhazi.
Mehrv: Gheymeh
Saoud: Grilled fish.
Venita: Beans and rice.
Lara: Welcome to Sharing Plate, a podcast all about food and the role it plays in our sense of self, our sense of place, and, of course, our sense of taste.
[Sound of wooden spoon gentling tapping against a saucepan]
Shell: I like cooking to have people around the table, you know?
Lara: Yeah, I know what you mean.
Shell: It just says this is how I, kind of, feel about you.
[Sound of a plate being placed on a table]
Lara: I'm Lara Bishop, and I'll be hosting guests from around the world as they share their plates that connect them to home, wherever that may be,
Venita: I am Kenyan, I am South African, I am Ugandan, but I'm a Londoner.
Lara: You are definitely. Laughter.
Venita: Always. Laughter.
Lara: To their people, whoever they are,
[Dialling tone]
Saoud: I need some professional advice now.
[Dialling tone]
Saoud: Says a greeting in Arabic.
Saoud’s Mum: Greets her son in Arabic.
Lara: And to their own special memories.
Mehrv: The way it was smelling me and my brother, we both said, “No, we're going to order pizza, it’s fine, don't worry about it!” Laughter. Memories of family.
Lara: This is a foodie’s journey that transcends generations and nations.
Helen: My favourite dish which goes with matoke was cooked by my grandma in Uganda.
[Sounds of salt and pepper grinders]
Saoud: Who knew that I would cook for you Lara?
[Sizzling and stirring sounds]
Shell: My mouth is watering just thinking about this melting pot of food that was created by love and unity.
[Sizzling sounds]
Lara: So please, come sit with us as we serve up recipes and stories.
